RESEARCH – PESTICIDES – ALTERNATIVES AT HOME
landscaped lawnOver-application of pesticides on home lawns leads to these chemicals running off into nearby surface waters or infiltrating groundwater.  Land Grant University researchers are exploring the alternatives to pesticides and best management practices for turf grasses. 

Researchers at Cornell University are exploring the potassium (K) needs for turfgrasses and soil K testsexternal link Appropriate K application may promote turfgrass resistance to microbial pathogens and reduce reliance on pesticides. 

University of Rhode Island external link and Penn State University external link researchers are assessing the environmental fate of pesticides associated with conventional and best management practices used in typical eastern turf management systems.  Several new golf courses will be using the monitoring protocols developed.

A project at Ohio State University, funded by the North Central Integrated Pest Management Center (IPM) Center, collected pesticide use information on turf in urban settings and began to develop a turf IPM definitionexternal link
