Representative activities in this focus area include:
New Educational Programs, Demonstrations: Develop and deliver participatory programs such as demonstration sites, workshops and trainings, partnering with the Sustainable Landscaping, Small Farms Initiative, and On-Site Wastewater Training focus areas.
Specific Island Initiatives:
- NEMO: Initiate NEMO program within Puerto Rico. Pilot NEMO on Vieques and other localities as appropriate with focus on sediment losses and control of non-point pollution to coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems.
- CEAP: Coordinate extension activities with ARS/NOAA/NRCS activities on the Jobos Bay CEAP watershed project. Based on priorities and opportunities, work to improve agricultural practices and/or onsite wastewater treatment within the watershed.
- Onsite Wastewater Focus Area: Work with Virgin Island’s government officials to generate training and certification programs for onsite wastewater treatment. This will be done in conjunction with the Onsite Wastewater Treatment focus area.
- Sustainable Landscaping: Share expertise and training between the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to develop pilot rain gardens and educational programs to control and treat runoff water.
- Inter-regional Activities: Work with Regions 4 and 10 to initiate collaborations with the Coral Reef Task force. The Coral Reef Task Force has developed local action strategies (LAS) focused on coral reef conservation. We will work to coordinate efforts between Task Forces in the Caribbean and Pacific focused on effects of land-based pollution (including agricultural non-point sources) on coral reefs and barrier islands. This inter-regional coordination effort will be focused on developing and adapting effective LAS to protect coral reefs and barrier islands associated with tropical island ecosystems.
- Conferences: Serve as co-sponsor for the 2010 Nonpoint Source Conference to held in St. Croix VI.
- Hispanic Serving Institutions Initiative: Work to introduce and engage faculty and students from Hispanic Serving Institutions in Puerto Rico into existing regional and national programs and projects through the NIFA National Integrated Water Quality Program.
