River and Stream Restoration
Hydrological alteration, channelization and culverting of waterways, bank erosion, inappropriate bank stabilization, loss of riparian habitats, fragmentation of river and stream systems and disruption of aquatic organism passage are activities in rural agricultural and urbanizing watersheds that have led to the degradation of river and stream ecosystems. River and stream restoration is the establishment of the general structure, function, and dynamic self-sustaining behavior of disturbed rivers and streams thereby reversing many of the negative human-induced impacts. New England Land Grant Universities are improving water quality and quantity through stream restoration research, education and extension.
